Last week’s DDoS attack on torrent tracker site Demonoid and the eventual crackdown on the sites servers has prompted the internet group Anonymous to react against the Ukrainian government and their authorities. It has threatened to take action against those who shutdown Demonoid and has promised that Demonoid will be brought back online.
“We bring sad news. Last week, our generous green friend, the Demonoid, was met with a state sponsored Distributed Denial of Service attack. This is the same type of attack that many citizens of the world, including many Anons, have been sent to prison over. These illegal actions were then followed up with a raid by Ukraine authorities. These operations coincided with the Vice Prime Minister of the Ukraine’s visit to the United States.”, it said in a blog post on anonpr.
The file-sharing website, Demonoid was subjected to massive DDoS attacks by the Ukrainian authorities, where the site had its servers. This was then followed by an all in hack, which then traced the servers to the countries largest data center Colocall, which housed the sites data. Officials then copied all the data and sealed closed the website.
Demonoid was arguably the most popular and widely used torrent tracker site in the world and in the U.S., with a global rank of 600 and ranked 300 in the U.S. The file-sharing site is one of the websites in the “Notorious Markets List,” created by the U.S. Trade Representative. The list also includes other sites such as clones of Allofmp3, Torrentz.com, Isohunt, Kickasstorrents, Btjunkie, and The Pirate Bay.
“In retaliation for your criminal acts against us and the free flow of information, we have already begun an operation against those responsible. Lazers are already being fired.”, Anonymous has said in the blog post.
As a part of its #OpDemonoid, the group has set the following targets,
1. Restore Demonoid services by any means necessary and, if possible, facilitate a series of mirror sites operated by free Anons everywhere. In essence, open source Demonoid.
2. Retaliate against those responsible for the interruption. And Lulz.
Our work will require time and patience but when we’re successful, and we will be, Demonoid will live again.
