BMW HP4: The Coolest Looking BMW On Two Wheels
Take the BMW S1000RR and track tune it and what BMW have in their hand is the HP4. We first got a teaser look of this machine about a week back and now it is here officially. The BMW HP4 is is a track tuned S1000RR, which is lighter, faster and comes with a bunch of cool racing tech installed.
To start with, the BMW HP4 is now quite a bit lighter than the standard model, with a dry weight of 373 lbs with race-ABS and 438 lbs with the tank filled. That probably makes it the lightest four cylinder production motorcycle out their. The HP4 also gets BMW’s Dynamic Damping Control (DDC), the first BMW production two wheeler to do so. More on this later.
There is no upgrade in the horsepower department and the 1000CC engine churns out 193bhp at 13,000rpm and 112 Nm of torque at 9,750 revs. The HP4 has three racing modes, rain, sport, race and slick and all of that 193bhp is uniformly delivered in all riding modes. The improvements also come from the race spec traction control system, quick-shifter, and the massive 200/55 ZR 17 rear-tire. Leaving the best part to the end, the HP4 even gets a launch control system, a term more usually used when talking about supercars.
For the HP4, BMW Motorrad has turned towards its four wheeler department for new tech. Most of the electronics and the BMW Dynamic Damping Control can also be experienced on an M5 for instance. The Dynamic Damping Control system adjusts the suspensions automatically to give better control over the machine while riding in any conditions, adjusting the damper systems on the go, whether on the straights or while leaning into a curve. The DDC works in perfect sync with the ABS and traction control system. But for those who dislike on-board computers dictating how you drive YOUR machine, you could choose the ‘slick’ mode where the computer intervention is minimum and rider control maximum.
Complementing the revised suspensions and traction control is the new Brembo radial monoblocks and Brembo 9x floating discs. Combine all this with reduced weight, courtesy a lighter sprocket carrier, titanium exhaust, lighter battery and wheel, you can get the best of the race track experience for yourself with the BMW HP4.
No official word on the pricing as of yet. Meanwhile go through the gallery below.
